Mission & Policy Statement

HGIC 9998

The mission of the Clemson Extension Home & Garden Information Center (HGIC) is to provide South Carolina residents with a source of accurate, dependable and unbiased information via a toll-free number (1-888-656-9988) and a comprehensive website (http://hgic.clemson.edu). This service is designed to complement the network of county Extension agents, Ag assistants and volunteer Master Gardeners by freeing the agents to deal with commercial agriculture and horticulture questions and to conduct programming for larger audiences. The HGIC also provides over 600 fact sheets on horticulture, food safety, and nutrition for distribution to residents.

The HGIC is staffed with highly qualified, degreed experts in both horticulture and food safety and preservation. It is our policy to assist homeowners and landscape professionals in the following areas:

  • Lawns
  • Landscaping
  • Gardening
  • Plant diseases
  • Plant insect pests
  • Household pests
  • Nuisance wildlife
  • Food safety
  • Food preservation

The HGIC is NOT staffed to answer questions involving:

  • Commercial agriculture (row crops)
  • Commercial ornamental horticulture (including sod farms, tree farms, golf courses, nurseries, and greenhouses)
  • Commercial fruit and vegetable horticulture
  • Ponds and pond weed control (fact sheets are available)
  • Pastures
  • Livestock and poultry
  • Pets
  • Wildlife food plots
  • Timber and wood lot management
  • Identifying mushrooms
  • Medical issues (rashes, reactions, poisoning)
  • Household moisture and mildew problems

The HGIC is celebrating its 9th year of serving the residents of South Carolina and looks forward to expanding its services and educational offerings in the years to come.
