In this month’s grower spotlight, Christiana is visiting Atkinson Farms, a roadside fruit and vegetable stand in Mullins, SC. They are one of the only commercial strawberry growers in Marion County, making them a beloved choice among locals.
Atkinson Farms has operated for over 100 years through several generations of Atkinsons. Like many farmers in the Pee Dee, the Atkinsons grow mainly tobacco. But during the tobacco off-season, they keep busy with strawberries, sweet corn, soybeans, and peanuts, as well as raising cattle.
This year, strawberry farmers across the state have faced several challenges with Fall flooding, fears of the emerging Neopestalotiopsis disease, and prolonged winter freeze events. Despite these challenges, Atkinson Farm is harvesting bucket loads of the sweetest strawberries they’ve ever grown with no sign of slowing down.
For fresh strawberries and sweet corn, visit Atkinson Farms at 1923 SC-917 Mullins, South Carolina.
