Score the Stems
- Make a fresh angled cut to the bottom of the stems.
- Use an old knife, box cutter, scissors, pruners, etc., and shallowly score (slice) down the length of the stem on two sides.
- Place the stems in a vase filled with cool water near the top.
Note: If you use a knife, be sure to use an old one that you no longer use on food.

When scoring the stems, apply gentle pressure so the blade does not go all the way through the stem.

How to Choose the Best Lenten Rose Flowers for Cut Flower Arrangements
Choose flowers that are forming seeds.
- As the flowers mature, they shed their stamens.
- Seed pods start to form in the center of the thick, colorful sepals.

This flower has dropped its stamens and is beginning to form a seed pod. At this stage, this flower will last a long time as a cut flower.
