How to Cut Lenten Roses for Long-Lasting Bouquets

Collect Flowers in the Morning

  • Cut the stems at the base of the plant.
  • Take a container filled with water outside so you can put the fresh-cut stems in water.

How to Condition Lenten Rose Stems for Longer Vase Life

Immerse the Flowers in Cold Water

  • Fill a large rectangular container with cold water.
  • Submerge the entire cut stem, including the flowers, in the container.
  • Leave the stems in the water for an hour or more.

Score the Stems

  • Make a fresh angled cut to the bottom of the stems.
  • Use an old knife, box cutter, scissors, pruners, etc., and shallowly score (slice) down the length of the stem on two sides.
  • Place the stems in a vase filled with cool water near the top.

Note: If you use a knife, be sure to use an old one that you no longer use on food.

Dip the Cut Stems in Very Hot Water

  • Make a fresh angled cut to the bottom of the stems.
  • Dip the bottom one inch of the stems into very hot water for 30 seconds.
  • Then place stems in a vase filled with cool water almost to the top.

How to Choose the Best Lenten Rose Flowers for Cut Flower Arrangements

Choose flowers that are forming seeds.

  • As the flowers mature, they shed their stamens.
  • Seed pods start to form in the center of the thick, colorful sepals.

How to Make a Floating Lenten Rose Arrangement

Often, there are flowers left over after making a bouquet. Those flowers can be used in a floating arrangement.

To create a floating arrangement

  • Cut the stems very close to the base of the flower.
  • Remove any leaves.
  • Place the flowers in a shallow bowl filled with cool water.
