Peu a Peau inscribed in the chimney
In 1714, Paul de St. Julien planned to build Hanover out of brick. After the foundation of the house was completed, there wasn't enough brick to finish the house. He had to fire bricks two more times before he had enough brick to finish the chimneys. When the chimneys were finally finished, he had "Peu a Peu" inscribed on in the top, French for "Little by Little." Barbara H. Smith, ©2019 HGIC, Clemson Extension

The steps are extremely narrow, and the tread is unequal. Barbara H. Smith, ©2019 HGIC, Clemson Extension
